A few words for our visitors:

Sao Nicolao Island

Description:

Sao Nicolao belongs to the Windward or Barlavento islands, and the municipality of Sao Nicolao includes the islets Brava, Raso and Santa Luzia, which are rich in flora, fauna and interesting animals and birds.
São Nicolou has a varied landscape, with green mountain ranges reaching 1,312m, and a largely flat, dry coastline.
It measures 346km2, and is the most southern of the Barlavento islands.

The main town is Vila de Ribeira Brava, which is sandwiched between the two mountain ranges.
The principal sources of income on the island are agriculture, fishing (especially tuna) and tourism, as per the other islands.
Corn, coffee and sugar cane are the main crops, and there are also lush plantations of papya and banana.

There is also a fish tinning factory, which employs a significant number of people on the island.
Sao Nicolao is a haven for trekkers and hikers, offering some spectacular scenery from the mountain trails.
The town on Faja, located in a valley, is a pretty, verdant town which also merits a visit.
At Ribeira da Prata, you will find the ‘Rocha Escrita', or inscribed rock, which predates the Portuguese arrival to the archipelago.
