Santo Antao takes its Portuguese name (meaning Saint Anthony) from the day on which it was discovered, in 1462.
Santo Antao is the most westerly of the islands, lying the furthest away from the African coast. It is separated from the island of Sao Vicente by the Canal of Sao Vicente.
Santo Antao is one of the windward or Barlavento islands.
The capital of the island is Ribeira Grande, with other major towns including Porto Novo and Ponto do Solo.

There is a small domestic airport on the island, though it is easiest reached by taking a ferry from Mindelo, Sao Vicente - it only takes an hour.
There is a port on Porto Novo, which is the capital town of the island.
The island is connected by a series of old, cobbled roads.
The beaches are lovely and picturesque with the best coast for swimming located to the South of the island (the seas to the North can be rough and very windy).
