Kazanlak

Description:

The town of Kazanlak is located on the western part of  the Valley of roses (Kazanlak kettle) at the foot of the Balkan mountains near the Tundzha river, some 34 km away from Stara Zagora. The population is 53 770. The Valley of Roses also known as Kazanlak kettle, is one of the most picturesque and biggest kettles in the sub-Balkan kettles. The kettle is a cross-road to the Shipka Pass and the fore-Balkan plains. The researches show that the area was inhabited by a large Thracian population, which reached the height of its cultural development during the 5-3 centuries B.C. A number of Thracian tombs were found in the vicinity, among them are  the famous Thracian Tomb, included in the UNESCO's World Heritage list. This is the only place in Bulgaria where completely preserved painting - a masterpiece of early Hellenistic art can be seen.

Kazanlak is an industrial center related to the extraction of essential oils for perfume and cosmetic industry, to weapon production and light industry. One of the symbols of Kazanlak region is the oleaginous rose, which in the 18th century turned Kzanlak into a rose-growing center in Bulgaria. The outskirts of the town offer favorable conditions for rural tourism. Above the town, up in the mountains, is the Shipka - Buzludzha National Museum Park related to the epic fights during the Russian - Turkish War.

Cultural landmarks: Iskra History museum sheltering finds from the Thracian town of Seutopolis; the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak; Chudomir Museum of Literature and Art, situated in the house of the winter; Kulata History and Ethnographic complex, located at renovated houses from the National Revival period; Museum of the Rose, which showcases the history of rose production and trade in rose products in Bulgaria; a drinking fountain built by Tsar Ferdinand I.

The THRACIAN TOMB of Kazanlak

The Kazanlak kettle where more than 1 000 Thracian tombs were found is also known as "The valley of Thracian Kings". The most valuable of all is the Thracian vaulted tomb of Kazanlak, known as the Kazanlak Tomb, a world heritage site protected by UNESCO. It is situated in the Tyulbeto Park in the northern part of the town. The corridor and the burial chamber are decorated with unique painted murals from the early Hellenistic period (the 4th-3rd centuries BC) - combat scenes, burial ritual of bidding a symbolic farewell with the Thracian king, contests with chariots. Due to the special conditions under which the painted murals have to be preserved, a replica of the tombs is built in the vicinity for tourist visits.

Among the vault mausoleums in the valley, which are illustrative of Thracian art one can find the Ostrusha tumulus, some 2 km to the south of Shipka; the tomb with the columns and a round vault chamber, the griffon tomb and the tombs on the Helvetia Hill in the Shushmanetz necropolis near Shipka; the tombs on the Golyama Arsenalka Hill near the village of Sheinovo, etc.

Shipka - Buzludzha Nartional Museum Park

It covers the historic localities, monuments, sites related to the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule, including Mount Shipka and Mount Buzludzha in the Balkan Mountains. The church of the Nativity of Christ is located some 12km away from Kazanlak, on the southern slopes of the Balkan Mountains, near the town of Shipka. It was built in 1902 in memory of the Russian soldiers and Bulgarian insurgents fallen victim in the Russian-Turkish War (their names were inscribed on the 34 marble plaques and their mortal remains were laid in the crypt in 17 stony sacrophagi). A bell tower with 17 bells soars above the main entrance. The domes are gold-plated. The shrine shelters a valuable iconostasis and the icons. The Shipka National Park extends over the places where epic fights in defense of the Shipka pass. On mount Shipka the majestic Monument of Liberty raises high. In the vicinity one can enjoy excellent conditions for tourism and winter sports.
