The town of Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria as well as an architectural and historic reserve site. It is located in the southwestern part of the Pirin Mountain, near the Melnik River, some 18 km to the southeast of Sandanski. The population is 243. The town is a remarkable monument of the Bulgarian medieval culture and the culture of the National Revival period. The houses are positioned amphitheatrically, cozily perch against the background of the famous Pyramids of Melnik - white sculptures shaped by nature and object of attention of numerous painters.
During the 17th and 18th centuries tobacco production and the famous wine of Melnic turned the town into a thriving commercial center. The cargoes loaded with the famous Melnik wine were traded not only within the Ottoman Empire but also in Venice, Vienna, Budapest, England, Spain. Cultural monuments are about 100 buildings. Near Melnik is the famous Rozhen Monastery.
Rozhen Monastery
The monastery is 6 km away from the town of Melnik. It was founded in 1217 and later the monastery was rebuilt several times. During the Ottoman rule the monastery established as a regional spiritual center. The main monastery Church of the Nativity of Virgin Mary was painted in 1732. It has a valuable iconostasis with marvelous wooden carvings, the craftwork of the famous school of Debar. Worth noting are also the mural paintings and the icons, the old dining-house and the bone-vault. The Rozhen Monastery is linked to the movement for national liberation of the Bulgarian people at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. The grave of Yane Sandanski can be found in close vicinity.
