DURANKULAK is best known for being the last village before the border and the site of a peasant rebellion in 1900 against an oppressive tax on agricultural produce. Like Shabla, it too has a lake lagoon on its eastern flank. The lake, with semi-salty water and swamp flora, is surrounded by steppe vegetation and, on the narrow strip separating it from the sea, sand-dune hugging plant life. The numerous gold and copper objects in the necropolis and the decorations from Spondylus and Dentatum are witness for active commercial relations with distant regions. The remains found there prove that the ancient inhabitants of this settlement possessed high level of economical, technological and cultural development.
