Description:

The town of Gorna Oryahovitsa is situated at the northern outskirts of the Turnovo hills, along the Valley of Yantra River at an average of 218m. It is located at the distance of 7 km north-east from Veliko Tarnovo, 3 km north-west from Lyaskovets and 247 km north-east of Sofia. The population is 35 404. The town is an important transport center and a juncture railway station. It has an airport too. The food and beverage industry is well developed in Gorna Oryahovitsa.

The fortress known during the Middle Ages under the name of Ryahovets was built in the 3-4th centuries, some 4 km from the present day town. The name is related to a kind of walnut tree common for the area. During the 12-14th centuries the fortress was an important unit in the defensive system of the capital city of Tarnovgrad. The fortress was destroyed in 1444 during the crusade of Wladislaus III Jagietto. In the 15-16th centuries the settlement moved to its present location. The handicrafts thrived there. During the April Uprising the town was a center of the First Revolutionary District of Tarnovo.

Cultural Landmarks: History Museum, some 7 km away from Gorna Oryahovitsa and Asen Raztzvetnikov's museum house in the village of Draganovo, monuments dedicated to the leaders of the April Uprising; Saint Athanasios' Church (the oldest historic monument in the town dated back to 1393), Church of Saint George the Victor, Church of Saint Nicholas the Wonder Worker, The Assumption Church, Church of Saint Peter and Paul.
