The town of Nova Zagora is situated in the Stara Zagora plain of the Upper Thracian Plain, some 38 km south-west of Sliven. The population is 25 220. The town has a station on the Sofia-Plovdiv-Burgas railroad. Agriculture is developed throughout the area. The balneology resort of Banya also called Korten Spa is located by the Tundzha River some 15 km from Nova Zagora.
The surroundings of Nova Zagora are particularly rich in archeological artifacts. On the territory of the town and in its surroundings there are some 35 tells. The most popular are the tells of Karanovo, Diadovo, Dipsiz, etc. More than 500 burial mounds and worship places have left from Thracian times. Also there are remnants of Roman fortresses in the surrounding mountains. Under the Ottoman rule the local population actively participated in the struggle for national liberation and independent Bulgarian church. In 1870 Vassil Levski organized a revolutionary committee in the town and Chieftain Stoil lead the Nova Zagora detachment during the April Uprising of 1876. During the Liberation War of 1878 the town was destroyed by fire and deserted. The region is very fertile for agriculture, growing a wide range of produce including grapes, sunflowers, cereals, and a variety of other plants.
Cultural Landmarks: History Museum with numerous archeological finds; houses of the Natioanl Revival period; an ancient complex and the tell near the village of Karanovo; the Dipsiz tell in the village of Ezerovo; the tell of the village of Diadovo.
