Byala Cherkva

Description:

Byala Cherkva is situated in the central part of the fertile Danube Plain, on the left bank of the Rositsa River.
The settlement is situated along the road connecting Svishtov, Sevlievo and Gabrovo. It is 40 km away from Veliko Tarnovo, 40 km away from Sevlievo and 25 km away from the historic Dryanovo Monastery. It is near the geographical centre of Bulgaria.
The territory of Byala Cherkva encompasses 33 000 decares - 24 500 decares are cultivable land, 65% of them are irrigated.

The main water artery passing through the town's territory is the Rositsa River. There are groundwater, springs and drinking fountains. The irrigation canals of the Alexander Stamboliiski Dam and the Rositsa 2 Hydroelectric Power Station are sources of irrigation of the cultivable lands. The surroundings of Byala Cherkva are a harmonious combination of beautiful nature and cultural and historical sights. Coniferous forests, field grasses, flowers, herbs and mushrooms grow there. The first low hills of the Fore Balkan are situated there, grown with mixed forests of oaks, maples, acacias, limes and poplars. The region is rich in medicinal plants - dog rose, sumac, marjoram, thyme, St. John,s wort, camomile, jointweed, plantain etc. The fauna is represented by mammals (the wild boar, the hare, the fox, the hedgehog), game birds (the wren and the partridge) and fishes (the carp, the sheat-fish, the barbel, the chub).

Cultural and historical sights

The first village cultural club in Bulgaria, founded in December 1869 by the revolutionary and cultural worker Bacho Kiro, became a centre of the Bulgarian spirit. Serious educational and literary activities, closely connected with the revolutionary struggles, took place here. It was here that the seed of revolution was planted, and 101 rebels against the Ottoman rule - all menbers of the cultural club - followed their teacher to the battle in Dryanovo Monastery during the April Uprising in 1876.

MEMORIAL BELL TOWER
It rises majestically in the centre of the town. One of the first monuments in honour of the National Liberation in Bulgaria, built in 1878. The advance detachment of General Gourko entered Byala Cherkva on 6 July (24 June old style) 1877. The Russian liberating troops were welcomed by the population and addressed with a moving speech by Irina Bacho-Kirova. She started with donations by the Russian officers a fund for the construction of the monument. The tower is 25 metres high. A clock bought with money donated by the teacher Yoakim Vassilev was fitted to it in 1929. The clock still works.

The interesting historical objects in Byala Cherkva; the town's location; the proximity of natural and historical sights; the preserved traditions, lifestyle and hospitality of its inhabitants are favourable conditions for the development of explorative, schoolchildren's, rural and eco tourism. The objects are served by a tourist guide and are easily accessible. One-day trips from all towns in the country to Byala Cherkva are possible.
