The island of Sao Vicente is the most eastern of all the Cape Verde islands, lying 445KM from the coast of West Africa.
It was discovered on Saint Vincent's day (January 22nd), hence its Portuguese name Sao Vicente.
It is best known for the city of Mindelo, the second largest city in Cape Verde, and the country's cultural capital.
It also hosts one of the country's deepest port, which has long been a refuelling point for British ships.
The island is relatively flat, owing to erosion, with its highest peak (Monte Verde of Mount Green) at 774 metres. It is approx metres 16 long and 24 metres wide.
The average yearly temperature is 24' C, with little rainfall.
The main industries are fishing and tourism. Crops such as corn, potatoes and beans are also grown.
Mindelo is the second largest city in Cape Verde, after Praia (Santiago). There are churches, a post office, banks, shops, and a hospital on the island, and there is an adequate supply of water and electricity.
Sao Vicente is home to some spectacular unspoilt beaches - and the southern coast is a haven for wind surfers. Baia das Gatas is famous for its natural swimming pool - a lagoon, separated from the sea by a volcanic formation.
Sao Vicente is now most famous for the town of Mindelo, the thriving cultural capital of Cape Verde. Mindelo is home to the country's most prolific figures, including the world famous musician Cesaria Evora, the author Germano Almeida, and the late Manuel Lopes, who founded the revolutionary literary Claridade movement.
