The island of Sal earns its Portuguese name from its principal commodity - Salt. It was once home to the world's largest Salt mine, Pedra do Lume, and salt is still produced in several areas of the island. 

Sal is probably the oldest of all the  Cape Verdean islands, owing its existence to a volcanic eruption some 50 million years ago.

Geography and climate:
The climate in Sal Island is invariably hot and arid;it is perfect place for those sun-seekers all year round. The Southern part of the island where Santa aria is situated is the most sheltered from the wind which sweeps the archipelago.

Sal Island measures around 215m2-30km long and 12 km wideand the highest peak of the island - Monte Vermelho (The red mountain) is just 406m above sea level. The capital of the island is Espargos.

The main towns in Sal are Santa.Maria, with 1.367 inhabitants, and Espargos , with 5.877.

Traditionally, the 14,000-strong population of Sal have relied on salt collection, fishing and, more recently, tourism.

In recent years, migrants have come from other islands in the archipelago to work, and the population has more than doubled. There has also been immigration from the West of Africa.

The main port on Sal is at Palmeira.

Tourism has developed quicker in Sal than on other islands, originally owing to the fact that it has had an international airport for a long time -created many years ago, for South African Airways to refuel their aircraft on long-haul flights.
