Bansko is a small Bulgarian town in the district of Blagoevgrad, located at the foot of the Pirin mountain at an altitude of 936 m above sea level. The town is situated at the crossroads of important routes from Central Bulgaria to Greece. Nestled between the Pirin, Rila and Rhodope mountain ranges, Bansko is located at the foot of the Pirin National Park, listed in the World Register of Natural Heritage. Bansko is a center of winter and summer tourism. The mountain peaks near the town, the numerous lakes, the old pine woods make it a popular place for recreation, sport and tourism and in recent years the town has gained international popularity through the booming development of tourism and cultural events such as the prestigious annual Bansko Jazz Festival. The nearby village Banya, located only 5 km from the town, is famous for its 27 thermal mineral springs.

Bansko is not just a pretty town but is now also famous for its great skiing. The Pirin mountain is regularly compared with the French Alps due to their similarity. Due to the alpine character, skiing conditions here are excellent and Bansko is seeing very extensive investment already to turn it into one of the best ski resorts in Bulgaria. New ski lift have already been installed and the amount of ski runs are beiing expanded constantly. Snow making facilities have recently been improved and skiing can now last into early May. Due to this very extensive investment Bansko area is one of the best places to buy into.

A new gondola lift was installed during 2003 which now means you can get up to the ski-runs from the town in about 10 mins on the lift instead of the previous 45 minute minibus ride up twisty roads. This, along with an expansion of new housing around the gondola (which is on the south west edge of the town by the river) means Bansko can expect significant growth over the next few years. Bansko is currently cracked up to be the premier skiing resort in Bulgaria.
