Apriltsi (240 sq. m.; 4300 residents) huddles in a picturesque ravine at the foot of the northern slopes of the highest and most ravishing portion of the Central BALKAN Mountains.
The town of Apriltsi (506 m. above sea level) is the municipal economic, cultural and administrative centre. It stretches out for 12 km. along the Vidima and the Ostreshka rivers.

Lying nearly the centre of Bulgaria (200 km. from Sofia and 300 km. from Varna), Apriltsi has direct bus-lines to towns of Sofia, Pleven, Lovech, Troyan, Plovdiv, Gabrovo and Sevlievo. In spite of its mountainous position, the town is only 30 km. to the south of Sofia-Varna highway.
Surrounding nature is what makes Apriltsi a place of great appeal. The awesome scenery, immediate proximity to the mountains serviceable recreation facilities and private lodging enhanced by the open amicable nature of the mountaineer leave unfading memories in one`s mind. The municipality borders on the CENTRAL BALKAN MOUNTAINS National Park. The biospheric nature reserve of Severen Dzhendem is to be found here. It is the highest nature reserve within the National Park. I southern border follows the mountain crest between Yorousha Gramada and Paradzhika peeks, and symbolically separates the reserve from its southern "sibling" Dzhenedema. This is the kingdom of crags and cliffs; austere and unapproachable walls rise up on all sides, and reach out towards Botev Peak (2,376 m. above sea level) the dome of the Balkan Mountains. Breathtaking gorges and vertiginous precipices make on stand in awe at the sight of this incredible spectacle. Big predatory animals, watchful wild goats and birds of prey live in paradise here. Speaking of paradise, one cannot help mentioning the single heavenly place "recognized" by people of the Paradise locality; the Cliffs Heaven, the welcoming Paradise chalet and Paradise Falls.
Of no less appeal is Vidima waterfall to the north. If one happens to notice a shadow of an enormous hovering bird, one should doubt that that is an eagle watching over the Kingdome of Wildlife.
In Bulgarian history the name Apriltsi is associated with the heroic days of April Uprising in 1876. On May the 1st, 1876 in this region burst out Novo selo Rebellion the most large scale rebellion against the Ottoman oppressor in Northern Bulgaria.
Nine days of the revolt - nine breaths of freedom were won against atrocious bloodshed and total ravage of the valley. The memory of these days is kept in the Ossuary Sveta Troitsa (Holy Trinity) Monastery in Apriltsi
Memorials dedicated to the Heroes of the April Rebellion are all over the vicinity. At the foot of the mountain peak Maragidik is the Monument of Tsanko Dyustabanov one of the best-known leaders of April Rebellion in the region.
