Montana is situated in North-eastern Bulgaria, 50 km south of the Danube, 40 km north -west of Vratsa and 30 km east of the Serbian border.
Montana is the centre of the administrative region. It is situated in northwestern Bulgaria along the Ogosta River. The town originates from the old Roman stronghold Castra ad Montanezium (a stronghold in the mountain), known also as Montana. The labor tools, ornaments, coins etc. found there reveal a long life of the village that was initially established on Calebair Hill on the left side of the river. It is from here that a blazing spring started and is now an integral factor for the town. The passing roads played a great role in the development of the town.
The Historical Museum in the town possesses over 50 thousand exhibits of various kinds and epochs. One of the main factors for the development of the districts is the Danube water transport. The port in the town of Lom is the second one in the country, it is the river port of the Northwest Bulgaria and is the fastest way between West Europe, Bulgaria and White sea.
The abundance of natural recourses - West Stara Planina, the mineral springs, interesting natural landmarks, the cultural and historical heritage, good game countries, authentic style of living and the pure region are a substantial reason for development of the tourism in the district.
Bus and railway transport are the two types of transport connecting the town with the rest of the country. There are regular bus lines to Sofia, Lom, Vidin, Belogradchik, Pleven, Vratsa and to the smaller settlements. Montana is transitional railway station on the line Boichinovtsi-Berkovitsa.
South of the town are the remains of the old Rome fortress Kastra and Montanezium. Most of the findings, found there are in the Montana Historical Museum. Only at the distance of 22km west of the town is located the Loupushna monastery. The Montana Dam has been turned into a wonderful place for rest, sport, water tourism and fishing. Many holiday bases and establishments are built here.
