Description:
The town of Dryanovo is situated in the northern spurs of the middle Balkan range, in the valley of Dryanovo river which is a Yantra feeder. The population amounts to 9700 residents. The town is located 25 km away from Veliko Tarnovo, 20 km away from Gabrovo and 18 km from Tryavna. Dryanovo is a part of a first-class highway named Ruse- Stara Zagora and a railway station connecting North and South Bulgaria.
The first evidence of a settlement place, called Dryanovo, is in a Turkish register from 1460. The famous craftsmen, butchers, tailors and goldsmiths made deliveries and supplied the Ottoman army, and gradually repaired their financies. Dryanovo had a name for a birthplace of talented builders acclaimed both in Bulgaria and abroad. However, the most famous builder was "usta" /master/ Kolyu Ficheto (1800- 1881). In the 19th century, local people built up three public schools, one private school, three churches and the first reading- room.
At present the town increasingly strengthen its position as a tourist destination. Climate is healthy, and an echo-friendly road at about 270 m to 510 m altitude is located along the Monastery of Dryanovo, only at a distance of 4 km from Dryanovo. Near to the echo- friendly road is the entrance of a cave named Bacho Kiro where are the oldest traces of human presence in the whole Balkan Peninsula. In the surroundings of the town some relics of ancient Thracian and Roman villages, fortresses, columns with epigraphs have been discovered.
Among the tourist attractions are: the museum named Kolyu Ficheto, the Lavchiev`s house, the Ikonomov`s house, the church St. Nicholay, the bridge across the Dryanovo River built by Kolyu Ficheto, the churches are St. Bogoroditsa (Virgin Mary) and St. Troitsa (Holy Trinity) built in 19th century.

Dryanovo monastery
Dryanovo monastery is situated about 4 km away from Dryanovo in the picturesque gorge of the Dryanovo river.
It is believed that the first monastery in this place was founded some 2km to the north of the present-day buildings, in an area called The Little St Archangel. Its founders were two rebel boyars of the then-capital city of Turnovo -the Assen and Petar brothers. In the 14th century, the holy place was one of the main centres of Hesychasm and sheltered many monks. At the beginning of the 15th century, the monastery was destroyed by the invading Ottoman troops. Later on, it was reconstructed on a neighbouring site, known as the Big St Archangel, but the fate of this monastery was no happier than that of its predecessor. Dryanovo monastery was restored anew at the end of the 17th century, this time in its present-day place. The main church of that time had a single nave and was half-hidden in the ground. It was standing very near to the present-day church; besides it, there was also a secondary shrine.
The renovation of the monastery was started at the time of father Rafail, during the 40es of the 19th century. The current residential buildings rising from the side of the river were built at that time, while the new church was finished in 1845. Gradually, the renovated Dryanovo monastery became a religious and cultural centre and one of the largest and well-kept cloisters in the region of Turnovo.
The monastery library keeps a great number of manuscripts and church books.
Dryanovo monastery is among the most visited tourist spots in Bulgaria.
The Bacho Kiro cave
The Bacho Kiro cave is situated near the Dryanovo Monastery, in the canyon derived from both the Anduka River and the Dryanovo River. It is located 30km from Veliko Tarnovo and 4km from Dryanovo.
It is the first provided with all services. The discovered remains prove the existence of human life as far back as the palaeolithic age.
The cave was declared a natural heritage in 1962 and last renovated in 2002.
The cave features a 3600 m long and complicated labyrinth of galleries and branches. There are 2 different ways. The first hall in the cave is called Predverieto (the porch). In the inner chamber of the hall, the roof ascends swiftly and formes a short tunnel called Arkata. South of the tunnel the galery takes the shape of a gothic temple; this part is called the rainy hall because of the many stalactites in the form of raindrops. From the roof, which has white color, there are many stalagmites. The first formation found on the underground road is called Medusas, after this one can see the Bear's slide. The central gallery is called Pope Hariton due to the presence of the stalactite descending from the roof and forming a monk shape. In the next smaller hall, one can see the Lone Stalactone that has a diameter of 35cm.The next hall is called the hall of the lakes, on the floor are dried lakes 2m stalactones. The narrowest part of this hall is called Purgatory. The next hall is called throne, there are white stone forming a shape of waterfall. The next halls are called: the congress hall, the waiting hall, the eagle, the fountain, the spine, the stone forest, and the tongue of the mother in-law, the dough.
