The sandy Pyramids are rocky formations so called earthy pyramids, located on the south - west slopes of the Pirin Mountain. They are situated in the outskirts of the town of Melnik on an area of 50 sq.m. The Rozhen Monastery is also situated in this region and they both are visited by a lot of tourist.
These fantastic natural sculptures are unique natural phenomenon. In geological aspect they are built of grey - white Pliocene sands, which are admixture with clay seams. Later conglomerate from Pirin dragged down rock-sand material with thickness of 120m piled up. As a result of the erosive effect of winds, water, sun and snow, remarkable natural sculptures with strange form (mushrooms, minarets, swords, "Egypt" pyramids etc.) have formed.
Some of the most impressive nature sculptors are those with the shape of rock-mushrooms. The presence of rock "crown" protects, the sand-rock material beneath it from demolition. Namely this demolition process has created the remarkable nature work. The most famous group from this type is located near the Rozhen monastery.
The tourists track from Melnik to the monastery leads to the marvelous natural sculptures.
